CALL US
Uphold Advocacy has consulted widely with care home managers, registered nurses and carers as to the training they receive in respect of the Mental Capacity Act (2005). All those spoken with report they only receive mandatory training in respect of this, which is predominantly online.
Training as to the application of the Mental Capacity Act (2005) into practice is not provided. Social and health care workers are not taught how to undertake or document mental capacity assessments and this is often reflected in the documentation seen in care homes. Best interest decisions do not follow the best interest checklist and limited evidence is provided as to decisions which are made being reasonable, proportionate and in the best interests of a person.
This course covers the information to provide and the questions to ask when assessing capacity. This also includes how to document a capacity assessment to ensure the evidence is provided to support the conclusions reached in assessments. This course will cover the decisions which social and health care staff need to complete within their day to day work.
This course covers the areas which must be included in order to complete a best interest decision, in accordance with the best interest checklist. This will cover the best interest decisions which care homes complete in their day to day work and how to document this.
This course covers all aspects of covert medication from when a resident initially refuses medication, those who must be consulted, the processes and steps taken, the roles of those involved, documentation, through the final best interest decision being made.
As with all training the curve of forgetfulness is present, and this can also impact on the confidence of those who have undertaken training. At Uphold Advocacy we provide a unique consultation service for those staff who have completed all three training courses. Access will be provided to telephone advice and support with the trainer.
A review facility will also be provided to those who have completed the three training courses. Completed mental capacity assessments and best interest decisions can be sent to the trainer for feedback and recommendations. This ongoing support will ensure health and social care staff who have completed the courses maintain their knowledge base and expertise in these areas.
